The Deadliest Hero: The Steel, The Sun and the Crazy

Superman. Last son of Krypton. Defender of Justice. Inpiration for the human pinnacle.
The Sentry. Power of a million exploding suns. Golden Guardian of Justice. Mysterious and powerful.

These two stall worth guardians of justice are set to collide against each other’s awesome might in this edition of…THE DEADLIEST HERO!!!

Now according to the experts at Wikipedia and DC and Marvel wiki’s, I will now compare the powers and stats of the two heroes in order to gauge the likelihood of victory for one of these champions.

The weigh in:

SUPERMAN

Height 6’3
Weight: 225 lbs

SENTRY
Height: 6
Weight: 194 lbs

Now on the sheer size and weight, Superman has the advantage but considering this is a battle with powers, it really has no bearing on the competition. But if both powers were removed however , then Kryptonian would have to be the one with the advantage just out of having 31 lbs of extra muscle and 3 inches

ADVANTAGE:
SUPERMAN

Now lets get down to the meat of the battle. The POWERS!!

STRENGTH
Superman:
The exact magnitude of Superman's strength is unknown. This is because Superman's strength, like his other powers, has fluctuated over time but his strength should effortlessly range into the multi-megaton level at the very least. Arguably the strongest being on the planet and one of the strongest beings in the Universe, Superman has feats of strength currently, such as being seen lifting an enormous pyramid and flying it to Mars without any strain and they can weigh millions and millions of tons depending on the size[255], he is so strong that he is capable of ripping off the arm of the likes of Darkseid and physically defeating him in combat[256], he is so strong he has been able to move the planet Earth away from the Sun while a powerful Cosmic Entity named Starbreaker was pushing it into the Sun[257], he is so strong he possesses the strength necessary shatter entire worlds[258]. Superman has been chained to the endless wheels of the Mageddon machinery and his strength was used to move the gears of a weapon whose size dwarfed the entire Earth/Moon system itself.[259]While the exact magnitude of Superman's strength is unknown, it is generally accepted that his strength easily surpasses the capacity to lift 1,000,000 tons, but how much more is not known exactly. This is because Superman's strength, like his other powers, has fluctuated over time. He can become "supercharged" and exceed his "normal" power levels as evident when his power absorption ability ran amok which needed the Parasite to drain off his excessive power levels.

Sentry
The Sentry's strength varies greatly and depends on his mental stability. The Sentry possesses vast superhuman strength, granting him the ability to lift (press) far in excess of 100 tons easily. He is one of the strongest beings in the Universe. He has demonstrated several astonishing feats of strength during his career, including easily lifting tremendous weights, ripping Carnage in two (although it is not certain if he is dead), taking Terrax the Tamer's cosmic axe and shattering it with his bare hands[1], lifting a cruise liner effortlessly and his unrestrained power overloaded the Absorbing Man. While possessed by The Void he was able to break the Hulk's limbs with relative ease and was even able to easily overpower and defeat Ares in combat going so far he ripped him in half, presumably killing him. He can also absorb solar radiation for additional strength. His recent clash with the most powerful incarnation of the Hulk has suggested his physical prowess is among the elite as he was able to hold his own. The Sentry has yet to demonstrate an upper-limit to his strength, but he has shown that it can rival the likes of Hercules, the Hulk, although this depends on his mental state.

Advantage:
SUPERMAN

Sentry’s strength again depends on his mental state. If the Void is whipped out, then Superman would be in serious trouble cause if Sentry can break all of Hulks bones in one swing, then his Kryptonian ass would be in a sling. But Superman does have the advantage of mental stability so his strength level will always stay on the level and he has moved worlds and giant gears the size of the earth. But the Sentry’s limit has never been tested so his true potential his never been tested. Although the advantage on only very slight on Superman’s part, I’m sure the man of steel would be able to come out on top of this if he can outsmart the Sentry…and that’s if uncle bi-polar stays under wraps in a Zoloft blanket

SPEED

SENTRY
The Sentry possesses the ability to think, move, and react at superhuman speeds. He has been observed catching bullets and has also been seen moving far in excess of supersonic speeds; his speed on earth is enough to be gauged as fast enough to move at orbital velocity (5 miles a second). It should also be noted that the Sentry has numerously been depicted as able to fly to the sun in a matter of moments (where it takes light over 8 minutes). This shows that his speed during inter-stellar travels is several times in excess of the speed of light, or (alternately) demonstrative of an ability to enter hyperspace.

Superman:
Superman is capable of enhanced reflex action and the ability to move at incredible speeds by sheer force of will. While not nearly as fast as the Flash (Wally West), Superman can move at speeds much faster than light and is one of the fastest beings in the Universe. Superman can match most other speedsters in their ability to perform super fast movements, reactions, and processes. He can use this power to disarm opponents with or without heightened reflexes, catch bullets or shrapnel or cross vast distances in seconds. Superman can also run at incredible speeds and even keep up with most speedsters; he was seen running steadily alongside the flash at a speed of 2000 miles per second (mach 9350) [269]He has been seen flying from the Moon to the Earth in less than 2 minutes. Superman is so fast that he is even able to vibrate through blows akin to what the Flash can do as seen in his fight with Doomsday. Superman has also been known to fly from Pluto and back in ten minutes.

ADVANTAGE:
TIE

It’s hard to gauge the maximum speed for each character since neither has been fully pushed to the limit. All articles say that both Sentry and Superman are capable of moving at the speed of light or faster which would make them about dead even in my book. So no advantage there since it’s hard to measure. Superman can move at even speed with all the speedsters of the DC universe although he can’t reach the maximum speed that they reach. Sentry has not been pitted against any speedster so it would be interesting to know the results of such a match. So there isn’t any advantage speed wise for either. Sentry’s power could be limited again by his power but that gets evened out by Superman’s weakness (Kryptonite, Red Sun, Nachos)

STAMINA

SUPERMAN
Superman has the ability to maintain continuous strenuous physical action for an undefined period. Theoretically, most incarnations of the character has unlimited stamina as his enhanced nourishment is produced from the solar energy his cells process. Superman like other Kryptonians does not get tired[266] and does not need to eat or sleep and can be sustained on Solar energy alone[267]. He can also hold his breath for an undefined duration.

SENTRY
Sentry's enhanced musculature is far more efficient than that of a human. As a result his muscles produce no fatigue toxins thereby granting him theoretically unlimited stamina. However, his stamina greatly varies, depending on his mental state. If he is fully stable the Sentry is unable to tire. If he is mentally unstable he can exert himself to his peak for approximately a week.

Advantage:
Superman

Again Sentry’s mental state is the deciding factor here in the fight. Both heroes depend on solar energy however if Sentry’s feeling a bit bi polar that day, then Supes can tire him out although it’ll take a week. And again it’s really only a slight advantage but it’s still an advantage. And seriously, Sentry has some serious issues. Someone get him a super lithium pill. The guy has all the powers and intelligence to build shit out of nowhere but he can’t figure out how to stop playing Beautiful Mind the home game.

Healing and invulnerability

Invulnerability
Superman:
Superman's body is nigh-invulnerable. This ability's levels have changed over time. He has taken a blast equivalent to a million nuclear war heads point blank and remained conscious[260]. Currently he is even more durable than in the past. He has entered the Sun and emerged completely unharmed[261], he has even traveled through Krypton's Red Sun and survived physically unharmed, even though Red Solar Radiation depowers and weakens him[262]. He has been seen to skirt the photosphere of the sun (100,000,000 degrees F). Superman has even been shown withstanding Darkseid's Omega Beams, a feat that was previously considered impossible. Superman was able to survive the nuclear destruction of the entire moon in the year 2995 when he was stuck in the future. The moon had been lined with sufficient nuclear devices to disintegrate it in one shot and Superman was in the center and survived without being hurt at all[263]. Superman has withstood 3 particle beams, each powered by the core of a planet, fired at him. One of these planet-powered beams was a plasma beam capable of leveling a huge city a few times over entirely with a single blast[264]. Most likely his greatest feat of durability recently, is that he was recently able to withstand the destructive power of a Sun exploding and going Nova (A result of Brainiac’s technology.) at point blank range to the planet he was on (Which was eradicated by the force of the explosion with the rest of the surrounding system.) and survived without any visible physical damage although the explosion did knock him out[265]. In addition, his immune system protects him from all toxins and diseases. The most common explanations for his invulnerability are Superman having a super-dense molecular structure and/or a supercharged bio electric "aura" which acts as an invisible "force field" around his body within a few millimeters from his skin, and presumably within his body as well. The proximity of this field to his skin means that loose clothes, for example, may be burned off of him, while cloth that is close to his body is protected by the "aura;" This phenomenon is sometimes cited as Superman's reason for wearing a skin-tight bodysuit. It is sometimes implied that he can unconsciously extend this field to an undetermined extent to protect a greater area, allowing him to carry huge objects within the Earth's atmosphere and without gravity or inertia tearing them apart around his human-sized hands.

Healing Factor: In the extreme event that Superman is harmed, either by an alien matching his own strength or other occurence, he has been shown to have the ability to heal almost instantaneously from any wound, assuming that the process is not impeded from some outside factor i.e. Kryptonite. This "healing factor" is supplemented by his stores of solar energy and also seems to be an unconscious ability, as Superman does not seem to have the ability to control when he heals and when he doesn't. Much like a human has no control over their immune system.

Sentry
The Sentry is, for all intents and purposes, nigh invulnerable to harm. He has been seen surviving extremely harsh atmospheric conditions, including the vacuums of space. Nick Fury has stated that so far SHIELD has yet to find a way to kill him, and even Iron Man's scanners found no physiological weaknesses in the Sentry's body. However, it has been displayed multiple times that he is susceptible to mental manipulation: by the Void.

Resurrection: The Sentry appears to be able to bring the dead back to life under extreme emotional distress. After Ultron murdered his wife, Sentry was able to resurrect her by simply touching her. It does not appear he has control over this power, as he was shocked by his ability to do such an act. This may also extend to simply healing others' injuries.

Advantage:
Tie

Here they are again both dead even. Although there hasn’t been as many documented occurrences of Sentry’s limit to his invulnerability, he has survived several suicide attempts and the top minds of the Marvel universe have found no way to kill him. Hell it took a fucking Norse God wielding an enchanted hammer in his vulnerable human form to finish him off. Coupled with the healing factor of Superman and the resurrection power of the Sentry, it would be hard to find a way to keep either of them dead if you truly found a way to “kill” them. It was even proposed that Sentry maybe a divine being from Christian religion. WTF?!?

Additional Powers

Sentry
The Sentry possesses powerful psychic and mental powers mainly used for holding his physical form together, (though it is not yet known whether the Sentry can use them the way Professor X and other psychics use theirs). The only psychic abilities he has displayed so far was implanting his memories inside Paul Jenkins' mind. The Sentry was able to erase himself from the memories of every being on the planet.

Photokinesis: It may be theorized that the Sentry also has the superhuman ability to generate, control, and emit light. This ability to produce hard-light constructs may be similar to those of Dazzler when it was revealed that the Void is a just an expression of his repressed persona, and thus his creation
Light Projection: By conscious control over the light he produces, he can control its direction, frequency (color), amplitude (intensity), and duration. The Sentry can produce numerous effects with the light he manipulates. He can simply cause a bright glow all about his body. He can create a pulse of light on the order of several thousand watts seconds of power, which temporarily blinds people with its brilliance. This ability has been proven to be able to calm down the Hulk.
Energy Blasts: The Sentry can generate light, heat, force, and other forms of energy as powerful blasts and explosions of a yellow color. These blasts are usually generated from the hands and eyes. The maximum power of these blasts is unknown.

Vast Psionic Abilities: The Sentry possesses powerful psychic and mental powers mainly used for holding his physical form together, (though it is not yet known whether the Sentry can use them the way Professor X and other psychics use theirs). The only psychic abilities he has displayed so far was implanting his memories inside Paul Jenkins' mind. The Sentry was able to erase himself from the memories of every being on the planet.

Molecular Manipulation: Following a confrontation with Molecule Man, Robert discovered he has the powers of molecular manipulation. The extent of these powers are not known.

Skilled Combatant: Robert is an above average unarmed combatant

Superman
Heat Vision: The ability to fire beams of intense heat at a target by looking at it with the conscious act of activating this power. Visually, the power is typically depicted as two beams of red light firing from his eyes. These beams can be made invisible, allowing Superman to work undetected. His heat vision is so powerful that they are able to power up the giant ion planet moving engines with his heat vision alone, annihilate an entire army of Doomsday clones in one blast[271], and has even been stated to rival the heat of a Star. The area of effect can be consciously determined by Superman, down to the microscopic level. Recent stories imply the precision is so exact it can bypass a target's outer shell (not causing damage to a person's skull for surgical purposes

Super Scream: In one instance, Superman was shown to have the ability to project a "super scream" from his vocal cords. He used this ability to cancel out the impending threat of an already exploding nuclear detonation.

Super Breath: The ability to create hurricane force winds by blowing, and to chill his breath in order to freeze a target (this latter ability has also been called "freeze breath" and "arctic breath"). Superman can also breathe in large amounts of air, an ability used when dealing with and disposing things like clouds of poison gas.

Indomitable Will: Superman has shown to have a powerful Force of Will, completely free of evil or temptation. Having been raised by a kindly Kansas farmer and his wife, Superman was taught to protect life and help others.
Torquasm Vo Torquasm Vo is a Kryptonian discipline that Superman uses sometimes. It is basically a means of focusing ones mental discipline to help fight adverse effects such as mental domination. It can be used to manipulate someone's mind. Superman used that ability during his fight against the Eradicator. It was used to create an illusion to let Superman enter inside the Eradicator.
Torquasm Rao Allows him to tap into his instincts and separate himself from his body

Master Combatant: He has been trained by both Wildcat (in Boxing), and Mongul in the fighting arts. Superman has fought and learned from Wonder Woman. He has also learned more advanced martial arts techniques from Batman

Advantage:
Superman

HOLY SHIT! OMG is inserted right here since there cannot be anyway to measure these powers. Sentry’s light, mental manipulation and molecular control powers are pretty bad ass on their own. But king of the DC universe (no not Batman) along with the rest of the roster of the Justice aren’t strangers to having their minds fucked with. Luckily for Superman the Kryptonian arts have a chance of canceling out Sentry’s mental manipulation. And his sheer will can overcome the pacifying effects of the light he can cast. However the light bolts that Sentry can fire would only make the Man of Steel stronger. Even if he were to make hard light constructs, it would only make Superman stronger while it was hurting him. Not following me? The Sentry can only emit yellow solar energy therefore Superman’s body would only soak up that energy, making him stronger while Sentry is pummeling him with his hard light construct. The advantage Sentry can have is the molecular manipulation in which maybe the deciding factor if he can figure out how to make Kryptonite or blast dear old Supes with a dose of red sun energy. But that would depend upon if Sentry knew about Superman’s weaknesses of red sun and Kryptonite. Although Sentry maybe able to read minds but that has never been explored or demonstrated. However these days who knows what crazy ass shit Paul Jenkins will put in. If he does not know about Superman’s weakness, then the advantage would go to Supes because Sentry’s powers are levied by his mental state and if Superman can oust him in single combat, which I’m sure he could since he’s trained by the highest masters of combat in the DC Universe, then I’d have to say it’s good ol Kal-El. However the one edge is that Sentry is not afraid to kill. I mean he solves all his problems like this:

Weaknesses

Sentry
Psychic Assault: The Sentry has a fragile psyche and is readily susceptible to mental manipulation.
The Negative Zone: The Sentry is at his weakest in the Negative Zone. His powers and health gradually deteriorate the longer he is inside the zone itself and even worse, his counterpart/nemesis The Void, rules over the zone.
Mental Illness: The Sentry's mental instability has led to his immobility on several occasions. In laymen terms, he's crazy.

Superman
Magic: Superman's biomatrix is his most powerful asset, but the strength of this field is also its greatest weakness. It's permeability to certain wavelengths makes Superman vulnerable to certain radiations, particularly magical energies whose chaotic electromagnetic or extradimensional signatures disrupt this forcefield. Superman's vulnerability to magic varies on the special effects of the magic. No magic seems to be able to directly destroy him unless it comes from a semi-divine or divine source. He can be injured and worn down by magical entities. Magic can have powerful and unpredictable effects on Superman and his magical enemies have often proven to be the most dangerous. Recently, Superman has learned more about magic with the help of Zatanna and he is able to counter almost every spell. Magic has unknown effect on him. He was able to survive when he had a magical sword in the chest and a magical arrow in his back. It was during a fight against four Elder Gods. A fight that Superman won. He was able to withstand a magical blast that managed to knockout the entire JLA and both Wonder Woman (magic being) and Zauriel (Angel). He went after the enemy in question and stopped him.
Kryptonite: Since the destruction of Krypton, its remains (rendered radioactive by the explosion) have been spreading throughout the universe as Kryptonite, a crystalline substance whose specific radiation is lethal to Kryptonians native to this reality. The most common form of Kryptonite is Green Kryptonite, and its effect is directly poisonous. Kyrptonite from other realities does not necessarily have the same effects on all Kryptonians. For example, Kryptonite from the Pocket Universe is not as lethal to Superman as Kryptonite that comes from his native reality. Superman was able to survive inside a Red Sun that was surrounded by Kryptonite. We can guess that it doesn't affect him as much as we think.
Kryptonians: On the rare occasions where he has battled other Kryptonians, they seem more easily able to harm one another as well. A noticeable observation is that other Kryptonians appear to develop superhuman abilities immediately upon entering a yellow star system, whereas it took Kal-El many years living under a yellow sun for his powers to develop. (This may be because he arrived on Earth as a toddler. Had he been an adult or perhaps adolescent his powers would likely have manifested themselves much more readily.)
Lead: Superman cannot see through lead with his vision powers.
Solar Energy: Superman will eventually weaken without replenishing his energy reserves with normal (yellow) sun radiation. He is not replenished by red sunlight, and its radiation can be used to weaken him.
Psionics

Advantage:

Superman

Whew. Close one but good ol crazy Bob’s can’t seem to get over his Achilles heel which is that fact that he’s out of his damn mind. If he’s not fighting the bad guys, he’s fighting against himself. He is his own worst enemy as opposed to stable and boring yet immensely powerful Clark Kent. Even with Sentry’s psionic powers, Superman still has an advantage since Sentry can’t read mind and hasn’t demonstrated that ability. He can only erase or implant memories, albeit alter the memories of everyone on the entire planet. Superman’s ability to use the Kryptonian mental arts will be taxed to the breaking point since the Sentry can control molecules and was shown capable of killing Molecule man, one of the most powerful being in the Marvel universe but this still can be remain to be seen since Superman does have incredible will of his own. An analysis would suggest that Superman has the advantage here since the Sentry would not have knowledge enough to kill him unless Supes gets in the way of a red sun.

The other advantage depends on Sentry’s mental state. If he can maintain a healthy mindset, he can go on fighting forever and may have a shot at depleting Superman’s solar reserves but that’s a big if since Sentry maybe inadvertently powering the Man of Steel with his own light attacks and also we don’t know the limit of Superman’s level of soaking solar radiation.

Simulation:

Teleported to an alternate universe, both characters look towards each other as being the cause of their current predicament so instead of talking out things in a peaceful manner, they attack each other with blinding speed and ferocity…well namely Sentry starts it off since let’s face it, Bob ain’t exactly on his right meds today. So the biggest fight ensues as streaks of red and blue clash with blue and gold across the skies and darkness of space. Strength wise they match blow for blow as they tirelessly wail on each other. However in straight combat Superman begins to take and counter Sentries attack from being trained by Batman alone gives him an advantage. As it continues on Sentry begins to break out the powers of pacification but not knowing that he’s only juicing up Superman’s cells with solar energy makes the fight go longer and helps Superman heal from any damage received from the golden guardian. Bob uses the strategy he used against the Hulk of attacking and pacifying but Superman’s will and his mastery of the Krytonian mental arts coupled with an amazing will make this an attack that he can overcome and attacks with his most devastating attack, his heat vision.

Seriously injuried, the Sentry is off his game as the void begins to slip in and take over. Bob now has a fight on two fronts, Superman and his own mind. Sensing something is wrong, Superman asks if everything is ok and tries to talk him down but Bob, frightened and enraged breaks out his molecular powers, beginning to take apart Kal-El painfully and even begins to attempt to remove his biomatrix, which would mean certain death since he has not defense. But again, Clark’s most powerful superpower isn’t the invulnerability or flight but his mind. With a combination of will, Kryptonian arts, and intelligence he barely manages to hold his form but the stress has seriously fried his physical capacity for a fight. Sentry sees this and begins to attack a weakend Superman. To make matters worse the Void is beginning to creep through the cracks due to the frustration of the battle. But unknown to the Sentry, his attack of light, force and heat are tired to solar radation, more importantly, yellow sun radiation, which is super concentrated so that each attack only repowers Superman incredibly quickly. In a dramatic turn, in mid punch, Superman grabs Sentry’s fist to stop him and while at full power, Superman manages to knock Sentry back with a mighty blow that knocks him back out of the planet and onto the moon. The fight continues as Superman gives chase but now the Void has blown out of Bob’s shell and attacks Superman with its full fury, breaking all Superman’s bones and thrashing his internal organs. Death is imminent for Superman but the automatic heal gives Kal a second round and while he’s powered at full. Superman begins to attack the Void with full furry as they trade attacks on a physical and mental level. Using all of his arsenal of superpower of heat, ice, might and high pitched screaming, an exhausted Kal-El manages to knock back the Sentry and revert Bob back to human form as they both crash back on a devastated planet Earth, devastated from the ensuing battle. Even though a battle weary and torn Superman stands with the Sentry, Superman is still Superman while Sentry is Bob Reynolds who is weakend, intimidated and injured. Bob’s last view before passing out is the sight of the big red and yellow diamond logo as Superman stands triumphant before him.

Winner:Superman

Man of Steel indeed. Holy crap the writers love to build him up to an incredible level to a point where it’s damn near cheating if not for Kryptonite. I mean what’s his next power? To grant 3 wishes? Make the Simpsons funny again? Slapbox with Jesus? Lick shots at Joseph? OMG!! Apparently the only power that he does not contain is to make Warner Brothers speed up his pre-production to the reboot of his movie. I do like the Sentry as a character with a huge mental flaw of playing “What kind of celebrity crazy am I?” But ultimately it’s Superman’s super of will that powers him. If they were better educated on each other’s weaknesses and strengths then maybe Bob would’ve been the victors since Kryptonie is deadly but lets face it, Superman can like turn water to wine and turn magically into an absentee father. So the winner is Superman.

  1. You almost sound disgusted with Superman, personally I think hes over a bit over powered!, DC protects his baby, and Marvel doesn't do enough for theirs, I don't think of Superman as a real superhero as much as company profit booster... if that, I'd have more respect for him if they would classify or rate his abilities, but even I can see why they don't, it keeps him safe at the top, it was a good read!, good job.
